February 14, 2026
This October, join us in focusing on the vital role of fire prevention. From lithium-ion battery safety to the importance of working smoke alarms, discover how simple actions can protect your home and loved ones.
**Making Safety a Priority**
Every year, Fire Prevention Week serves as a critical reminder that fire safety is a year-round commitment. In 2026, our department is emphasizing the theme "Charge Into Fire Safety," with a special focus on the evolving hazards in our modern homesâparticularly the lithium-ion batteries that power our daily lives.
**Key Prevention Strategies**
Prevention is the first line of defense. By identifying hazards before they become emergencies, you can significantly reduce the risk of fire in your household.
Battery Safety: Only use chargers provided by the manufacturer. Avoid charging devices on soft surfaces like beds or sofas, and never leave batteries charging unattended for extended periods.
Smoke Alarms: Ensure you have working smoke alarms on every level of your home, inside every bedroom, and outside all sleeping areas. Test them monthly.
Cooking Caution: Stay in the kitchen while frying, grilling, or broiling food. If you must leave the room, even for a short time, turn off the stove.
Space Heaters: Keep anything that can burnâincluding furniture, curtains, and papersâat least three feet away from space heaters and fireplaces.
**Plan Your Escape**
In the event of a fire, you may have less than two minutes to escape safely. Having a practiced plan is essential:
Map it out: Identify two ways out of every room.
Clear the path: Ensure all doors and windows leading outside open easily and are free of clutter.
Meeting Point: Designate a safe meeting spot a clear distance from the front of your home.
Practice: Run a home fire drill at least twice a year with everyone in the household.
Fire Chief's Note: "Fire moves fast, but prevention moves faster. We encourage every resident to take ten minutes this week to check their alarms and walk through their escape plan. Those ten minutes could save a life."
Stay safe, stay vigilant, and letâs work together to make 2026 our safest year yet.
